Technical difficulties of floating LNG

For the shipbuilding industry, there are three types of ships with the highest technical difficulty and the greatest construction difficulty, namely aircraft carrier, luxury cruise ship and LNG ship. LNG carriers, also known as “marine super refrigerated vehicles”, can transport liquefied natural gas at – 163 ℃. They are also recognized as the world’s most difficult to build, high-tech, high reliability, and high added value “three high” special ships. So why is LNG for transporting natural gas so difficult to build?

Floating LNG

First, we should be able to liquefy and compress natural gas, reducing its volume to 1/600 of the original, so as to facilitate storage and long-distance transportation.

Second, the temperature in the cargo hold should always be below – 163 ℃ to provide proper temperature for the liquefaction of natural gas. This requires that the materials used to manufacture the cargo bulkhead should have the ability to withstand ultra-low temperatures.

Third, the construction of LNG ships is a labor-intensive product, and the manufacturing of a ship requires at least several million man hours. And there are thousands of components on a LNG ship, and any single component failure, as small as a circuit or a valve, may lead to the overall failure.
