What’s open die forging?

Hebei Haihao Group is a manufacturer of forged flanges made through open die forgings, which has got the ISO,BV,ABS certificates.

Open die forging is an important technique for many types of forging manufacturing. It allows rough and finishing shaping of metal, most commonly steel and steel alloys. It takes heated metal and compresses it between two dies. The metal is worked at temperatures ranging from 500°F to 2400°F and is shaped into the desired shape through hammering or pressing.

At its most basic level, forging is the process of forming and shaping metals through the use of hammering, pressing or rolling. The process begins with starting stock, usually a steel ingot, which is heated to its plastic deformation temperature, then “kneaded” between dies to the desired shape and size. In this way flanges are machined to various sizes.

During this hot forging, the coarse-grain structure of the ingot is broken and replaced by a finer grain. The inherent low density areas, microshrinkage and pores of the metal are consolidated by reducing the ingot, resulting in good central and structural integrity. Therefore, mechanical properties are improved by increasing density and improving uniformity.

No other metalworking process can equal forging in its ability to develop the optimum combination of properties.

Forgings can be produced to specifications for metal alloys including AISI, ASTM, AMS, API, SAE, ASME, AWS, JIS and GB and heat treated conditions to achieve critical physical properties, such as tensile, yield, elongation and reduction of area for the desired end use.
